LG Twins manager Yoon Kyung-yeop said after the team won the first game of the doubleheader.
Yim’s team won the first game of a doubleheader against the SSG Landers of the 2023 KBO Baseball League 8-3 on Sunday at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. With the victories, LG, which has won three straight, solidified its dominance with 73 wins, two ties and 47 losses.
It wasn’t an easy game. LG struggled to hit their starting pitcher Kim Kwang-hyun and were down 2-3 to SSG in the top of the sixth inning.
But the heavens were on LG’s side. In the bottom of the sixth inning, when LG was in control of the offense, rain suddenly fell with no outs and the game was suspended for 70 minutes. Kim Kwang-hyun, who had a cold shoulder, was sent down and right-handed reliever Noh Kyung-eun was brought in. LG scored three runs in the inning to take the lead. Shin Min-jae’s quick feet at first base shined, while Kim Hyun-soo, Moon Bo-kyung, and Park Dong-won hit a tying, game-tying, and wedge hits, respectively.
LG then had runners on first and second and third in the top of the eighth, but Go Woo-seok struck out Kim Kang-min and Choo Shin-soo, respectively, and flied out to center field to prevent a run. With momentum on their side, LG closed out the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI single to left by Park Dong-won, an RBI double to left by Moon Sung-joo, and an RBI single to left by Park Hae-min to make it 8-3.
“In the sixth inning, Shin Min-jae’s good base running, (Kim) Hyun-soo’s tying hit, and (Moon) Bo-kyung’s game-winning hit in a crucial situation brought the whole game to a close,” said LG head coach Yeom Kyung-yeop, “and (Park) Dong-won’s lucky hit allowed us to score another run and bring the winning momentum to our side.”
The pitching staff also performed well, including Ko Woo-seok, who earned a five-out save. Lee Jung-yong (five innings, three runs, one earned), Yoo Young-chan (W, one inning), Park Myung-geun (one inning), Kim Jin-sung (one inning), and Go Woo-seok (three, 1.2 innings) all pitched well.
Yoon said, “Starter (Lee) Jung-yong did a good job as a starter, getting out of a lot of jams. The winning duo of (Park) Myung-geun and (Ko) Woo-seok also played solid baseball.
