Cho Kyu-sung, Hwang Eui-jo ‘taste for goals’ side by side ahead of Klinsmann’s arrival

National team goalkeepers Cho Kyu-sung (Jeonbuk) and Hwang Eui-jo (Seoul) scored side-by-side before joining KlinsmannHo.

Jeonbuk Hyundai came from behind to beat Gangwon 2-1 in the 18th round of the Hana OneQ K League 2023 at Chuncheon Songam Sports Town on Nov. 11.

With their first three-game winning streak of the season, Jeonbuk moved up to fifth place (8W, 3D, 7L, 27-22G, Goal Differential +7). They are tied with Daegu FC (Goal Difference +1) on points and goal difference, but have the advantage on goal difference.

The game was the final match under acting head coach Kim Doo-hyun. In his eight games in charge from the 11th round onward, Kim recorded five wins, two draws and one loss in the regular season.

Jeonbuk appointed Romanian coach Dan Petrescu as its new head coach on Sept. 9.

Meanwhile, Gangwon, which has gone eight games without a win (two draws and six losses), remains in 11th place (2W6D10L-12P).

After a scoreless first half, Gangwon broke the deadlock with a goal in the first minute of the second half.

Jeonbuk defender Chung Tae-wook scored an own goal off a corner kick.

It was fixer Cho Kyu-sung who saved the day for Jeonbuk. In the 13th minute of the second half, he caught a pass from Ryu Jae-moon on a counterattack, overcame a defender, and hit a left-footed shot through the crotch of the opposing goalkeeper to tie the game.

After tying the game, Jeonbuk introduced Moon Sun-min and Kim Gun-woong to further pull the reins of the offense.

Eventually, Jeonbuk scored again.

This time, it was Cho Kyu-sung’s head that shone. In the 32nd minute of the second half, Kim Jin-soo’s cross after breaking down the Gangwon flank was met by Cho Kyu-sung’s head, and the ball deflected off a defender and into the goal.

It was the third and fourth goals of the league for Cho Kyu-sung, who was the top scorer last season (17 goals).

Following his goal against Ulsan Hyundai, he has been in fine form, scoring three goals in his last three games.

At the Seoul World Cup Stadium, Pohang Steelers and FC Seoul drew 1-1.

Pohang, unbeaten in two games (W1 D1), remained in second place (W8 D7 L3 – 31 points).

Seoul, winless in three matches (2 draws), remained in third place (8W5D5L – 29 points).

Seoul took an early lead through Hwang Ui-jo. In the 37th minute, Hwang found the top corner of the net with a powerful right-footed mid-range shot from outside the opponent’s penalty box. It was his second goal in as many games.

Hwang, who joined Seoul on a six-month short-term loan to get playing time after playing in Europe, is out of contract at the end of the month.

It was Hwang’s last home game for Seoul. He will be leaving the club on Thursday for Suwon Samsung Electronics.

In 17 league games so far this season, Hwang recorded his fourth league goal (two assists).

The game, which seemed to be heading in Seoul’s favor, was tied at one after Pohang scored a dramatic equalizer in six minutes of stoppage time.메이저놀이터
